Quick navigation
What is a blog niche?
A blog niche is a clearly defined topic that you’ll be focusing on your blog. The niche also needs to target a specific audience, and the blog content will be based on that particular topic.
The blog niche can also be referred to as the ‘main topic’ of your blog. Moreover, the content strategy and monetization plan are also based on the niche. That we’ll cover later in this post.
Why one needs to choose a specific topic for their blogs when they can write on different topics?
This is the question that troubles most new bloggers. And, I completely understand your concerns. Because, as bloggers, we are free to share ideas and thoughts.
So, why a specific topic?
Most successful bloggers have experiences to share. And, the most important advice for new bloggers is to pick a niche for them.
Let’s say you want to become a lifestyle blogger?
As a lifestyle blogger, you can write about;
- Health
- Fitness
- Lifestyle
- Fashion
- Food
- Fitness
- Pets
- Family
- Parents
- Children
- Outfits
- Motivation
- Work routines
- Skincare
- Hair growth
- Relationships
And, the list goes on…
How are you ever going to be successful with all of these topics under ONE SINGLE blog?
You can be if you are a big business fish or an entrepreneur who’s launching an online magazine with dozens of topics in it.
Or,
If you want your blog to be a personal diary, then you don’t need to focus on finding a perfect niche. Because it’s your diary. And, you can write whatever you want.
However, if you want to be intentional with your blog, serve your audience and make money from blogging then you got to find a niche.
And, I will help you.
Why do you even need a blog niche? [if it’s important?]
Let me share some reasons with you. In the end, it’s totally up to what you want to blog about. I’m just sharing with you the hard-earned knowledge.
- A niche blog helps to target the right audience.
- A niche blog makes you an expert or knowledgeable person in that particular field.
- It’s easier to grow an audience with a niche topic
- Making money with a niche blog is easy, if not quick
- A niche blog gets high-paying collaboration opportunities
With that, I also want to say that don’t compromise your passion. If you’re passionate about 2-3 topics then form your own niche. There are no rules set.
Of course, there are benefits for a niche site as Google consider relevancy. If your site content is relevant and kind of interchangeable then it’s likely easy to rank for search engines. And, it will further not distract your blog readers. Thus, building a perfect blog niche has more advantages.
If you are a one-army team then I definitely suggest choosing a niche that is not too narrow, and not too broad.
I know many pro bloggers don’t recommend doing it but here’s a thing. As a new blogger, it’s already overwhelming. The idea of launching a blog, thinking what to write about and now, getting stuck with a niche is all scary. I don’t want you to quit your decision.
You can always rebrand later. But, that’s a whole time-consuming process. One thing you can do is to choose a blog name that matches all of your 3-4 topics. If by chance, you want to narrow down your niche to 1 topic, it should be easier for you. For example, your own name. Your name is the safe domain that you can go with any niche.
In case you don’t know, I also rebranded this blog. I had to be clear with my niche, and it involved several steps. Long hours of work. But, in the end, it’s all worth it. My blog now grows every day. I make more money than what I used to make. I got accepted to Mediavine too.

But, first, let’s find blog niche ideas.
Let’s brainstorm niche ideas for your blog
This step is going to be a lot of fun. Upon my advice, take a pen and paper or a notebook to start writing. Or, open your notes app on your phone to type the ideas as you continue reading the post.
1 – Write down a list of things you’re interested in writing about
You cannot really start a blog about something uninteresting. It begins with an interest in a topic or a subject. Start out by writing a bunch of topics you are always interested in talking about. It doesn’t need to be any educational subject but anything that you love writing about.
Here are a few ideas;
- I love to write about traveling (I love anything related to traveling. From visiting new travel locations to travel budgets and beautiful travel destinations. I just keep talking about)
- I like writing fun facts
- Gardening
- Foods and recipes
- Healthy living
- Children health
- Cosmetic and skincare
- I like to talk about relationships and life in general
- I like writing about businesses and entrepreneurship
Action: Make your own list of things that you are always interested in writing about. It should be a rough list of all the ideas.
2- Write about hobbies, career or past experience
We all have some hobbies or things that we enjoy doing in leisure time. So, what are your hobbies? Do you enjoy reading? Do you enjoy painting? Do you spend time over self-care? Do you like teaching?
Now, what jobs have you done in the past? Maybe, you worked in an ad agency or in a health care unit as a nurse?
While it’s not necessary that you want to write about the same topics of your job but it gives you a good idea of your experience in the field.
3- List down inspiring blogs or magazines
What type of blogs do you usually read? Do you get inspired by those blogs, or maybe you have found your interest in some of those topics? Maybe, a self-improvement website or a home decor magazine.
By listing down some blogs, you can get an idea of what types of topics you usually read all the topics. This could lead to your topic of interest.
Action: Make a list of blog posts, articles, and magazines. See if these ideas help you clear focus about your niche.
4- Write about your milestones. What have you achieved in life?
Most blogs teach something they have accomplished in life. These blogs teach you how to achieve something in life, how to do something, or how to be someone.
See if you could teach new individuals how to do something. Maybe, teach a new skill or how to transform your life or maybe, how to practice a healthy lifestyle etc.
Here are a few ideas;
- Transformed my healthy lifestyle
- Lost weight
- Killed depression
- Became a tech expert in 20 years
- Build an online successful e-store
- Got out of huge debt
- DIY home decor
- Build a freelancing business
- Traveled 30+ countries
- Homeschool 5 kids
And, the list goes on…
Action: Share your milestones or something you have achieved in life so far. It is an indicator of what you want to pursue or share on your blog.
5- Note down popular blogging topics
By far, you must have a long list of ideas that you want to write about. But, if you are still unsure of what your blogging niche should be. Let’s look at some popular blog niche ideas.
- Health and wellness: This broad niche covers multiple topics including weight loss, diet plans, health tips, mental health etc
- Self-improvement: This could be a niche aimed at different age groups including self improvement blog for adults, college students, professionals, working mom etc.
- Parenting: It’s a popular blogging niche which includes parenting advice for kids, toddlers, children, school kids, adults etc
- Technology: The tech niche is wide with sub-topics including apps, games, softwares, programming languages etc. It could be a how-to tech blog or a tech-news website.
- Finance: It covers issues related to reducing expenses, paying off debt, spending money, saving money, etc.
- Lifestyle blog niche: It covers multiple topics by targeting a specific audience.
- Fashion : Fashion blogs are also popular including fashion trends, cosmetics etc
And, some other best blog niche ideas are;
- Fitness
- Home Decor
- Sports
- Lifestyle
- Relationships
- Productivity
- Blogging
- Marketing

How to find the right niche for your blog?
Now, as we are coming close to finding a blog niche, I want you to ask yourself a few questions before starting a blog and choosing a blogging topic. These questions must be a final answer to your blog niche.
And, a final step to stop procrastinating and launch a blog.
With my own experience, I know that it takes longing hours to find your blog niche but here’s the best advice I have for you.
It’s rare to find a perfect blog niche in the first attempt. But, you should definitely spend time knowing your interest, skill, and passion before choosing a blog topic.
Take my example.
My blog was not exactly what you’re seeing it today. I had a more complex blog and even an ugly name. But, as soon as I found my own blogging niche, I revamped my blog. I even wrote a complete blog post on how I rebranded my blog for success.
What you need to do?
So, you already brainstormed a few blogging niches. And, now, ask yourself some questions and just pick a blog niche. As simple as that.
Don’t procrastinate.
You already have noted down your interest and passions on paper. Now, it’s time to ask a few questions.
Question 1: Am I passionate about this topic? Can I write about this niche topic in the next 3 years or more?
Are you passionate about your blog topic? This is literally the first question you need to ask yourself. If you aren’t passionate about your blog then you’re most likely to quit in a few months. My personal advice is to never choose a topic you don’t feel like writing or talking about.
Can you write about the topic for the next 3 years or more?
If your answer is yes then you have already found your topic but in case, if your answer is negative then I would highly suggest you double-check.
If you ask me the same question, here’s my answer.
I can keep on writing about blogging for the next 10 years! Why? Because, I’m passionate about this topic. I keep reading about this topic and other relevant topics. I write about this topic. I answer questions related to this topic.
Question 2: Will I develop an audience for this topic? Are there people interested in reading about this blog niche?
Here are two scenarios.
First, can you build an audience for your topic?
Second, do you know if people would like to read about your topic?
For the first part, your niche is your audience. When deciding your niche, you also need to be clear who you are writing for. What’s your target audience? This will clearly help you the demographics of your blog.
Let’s say you want to start a health blog and you want to target stay at home women who don’t take care of their health and fitness. Now, ask if you can develop an audience. Yes! You can. Most stay at home women ignore their health and your blog will most likely attract every woman who doesn’t prioritize their health.
For the second part, here is some more help.
Validate niche potential size
First, you need to evaluate if people want to read about your niche or not. There are so many different ways to validate the potential of a niche.
But you can simply check;
- If people are asking questions on this topic
- If your target audience discusses the issue in social communities and facebook groups etc.
- Use Google trends
- A google search to check the volume of a few keywords
- If there are multiple websites on the same topic
- If there are products available online related to the topic
- Pre-discuss your topic on social media
Do keyword research
Next, if you’re a bit curious that if your niche is profitable then you can also do keyword research.
Use Google Keyword Planner to search the volume of the keywords. It gives an idea of how much people are searching for the topic.
Question 3: Would you be happy to be known for this topic?
This is more like a general question but it’s important to determine if you want to be recognized for this topic or not.
Would you be happy if someone comes to you for taking advice on your blog topic?
Question 4: Can you produce evergreen content in this niche?
Tell me, can you write evergreen content in your blogging niche? If you don’t know already, content creation is the fundamental part of blogging. No matter what niche you use, YOUR content stands you out.
As a blogger, you will be required to keep writing about your topic, and update your blog with fresh blog posts. And, that’s why you learn about the importance of creating and converting content.
If your blog topic is about seasonal content then chances are that your blog will certainly do well in seasonal months and will most probably disappear in other months of the year.
That’s why I want to emphasize evergreen content ideas. I even wrote this new ebook on evergreen content where I help you brainstorm, plan, create and convert evergreen blog posts. In return, your blog starts to get traffic, sales, and subscribers every month.
Question 5: Can you make money from this niche?
It’s obvious that we want to make money blogging when we spend hours building our blogs. And, that’s where you want to validate if your blog niche is profitable or not. Can you make money from your niche or not?
I strongly believe that if you pay consistent efforts, do the hard work, write great content and learn to implement then making money is achievable. You cannot just build a side-income blog but a full-time money-making blog.
You can make money with;
- Ads in any niche (Grow your site to thousands of pageviews every month and let ad generate income for you)
- Affiliate marketing
- Selling products on your blog
- Sponsored posts
- Freelancing
- Offering services
I also discussed how most bloggers make money in this post.
Single topic vs multi-niche topic: What to do?
The most common question is whether I should choose a single topic or a multi-niche blog? Well, it’s up to you and your objectives.
But, here’s my personal opinion.
If you have a money-making approach then consider a single topic with a clear targeted audience. However, you can build a multi-niche topic and make consistent income, but it will most likely happen afters years.
A single topic is easier to expand. You can build an audience quickly. You can cover one topic in detail and can become an expert. But, it’s hard to keep writing on one topic. Difficult to be consistent. Difficult to grow blog traffic in the short term. Quick SEO boost, and easy monetization.
Multiple topics are a bit hard to expand. The audience seems to get confused. Fewer chances of recurring users. You can write about different topics and can get more pageviews. It might take a little longer to grow and build an audience. It might be difficult to get an SEO boost in the short term. You’d hardly become an expert in one topic. Your content strategy will most likely be all over the place. Making money from such blogs will be tough.
I don’t recommend narrowing too much because it might kill your interest. But, I do want you to consider relevancy when choosing your multiple blog niches.
Let’s say you want to start a lifestyle blog
Discuss your three main focus areas and how they are relevant to each other. For example, a lifestyle blog focusing on health, fitness and diet plans with a goal to target stay-at-home women. It could fall into the health category.
A lifestyle blog focused on health topics targeting stay-at-home women. How’s that?

Arfa Nazeer says
Hi Mitchelle!
Thank you. I feel it’s totally okay. You can always define your niche and your audience. You need to first make the niche clear to yourself by going through some of these questions. It’s always not too late. You will get there for sure! 🙂

This is my biggest hurdle. The next one is finding a domain name that I like, is appropriate AND available. I have paid for 2 domains so far and I keep telling myself the name doesn’t really matter, I just need to start! I’m sure I can change it later if I really need to?
Moss Clement says
Hi Arfa,
Over 3,500-word blog post? This is epic! Choosing a niche for one’s blogging career is the best route to take because blogging about random topics will only get you and Google confused. In fact, search engine will not be able to define what your blog is about, which will negatively impact your SEO and search rankings. Ranking on Google will be impossible.
But when one picks a niche and makes the best of it by producing value, it signals Google what your blog is about and that you know your game.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Arfa,
super guide here. I can tell you if I was unable to decide on my niche , an I found your guide, it’d help me tremendously.
So great job!
As for me, the best niche is the one that lies at the intersection of passion (something you love to do) and profits (something that other people love to and would pay for it)
Arfa Nazeer says
Hey Moss!
Thanks for adding your insight here. It’s truly valuable for bloggers who still find niches overwhelming. Niche selection is an important step and we can’t just ignore it. As you said, a website topic should be chosen carefully so that it doesn’t confuse the audience as well as Google. And, we can’t talk more value! It should be a fundamental step for growing your blog. Thanks for your comment, Moss.
Arfa Nazeer says
Hey Nikola!
Coming this one from you is so awesome. Super glad to read that.
Ah, I really like your definition. We can’t just write about things we are not passionate about. Blogging is not a one-day or few months work, it’s a SOLID career.

Hi,
This is just what I was finding out.
I created my website with my name as domain name: https://www.ankitsaklani.com/
And was a bit confused whether to blog about social topics or lifestyle blogging.
I am a new comer to blogging world and loved the way you helped me.
Keep posting such good stuff.

Hi! Thank you for your guide. It gave me a lot to think about. Do you think “home making” is too broad a topic? I was originally going to focus on gardening for my area but seeing your point on evergreen content has me wondering. Maybe instead I do general home making ie gardening, cooking, cleaning?
