Whenever I read something online or in books, I gladly admire the skills of writers and acquire the ideas about writing differently. It makes me realize that how much a writer used to read before he planned to write. Reading and writing are two inseparable things and both are complimentary.
Last day, I was reading a post by Jeff Goins in which he mentioned a point, ‘writers need to be readers’. I absolutely loved what he wrote. The person who has a genuine passion for writing cannot devalue the tremendous importance of reading in the life of a writer.
This is why I thought to create a post on how reading inspires to make a better writer.
Agree to this?
Reading is an absolute source of inspiration for aspiring writers. As a writer, it is imperative to become a good reader and a learner. Undoubtedly, books are a beautiful escape. Sometimes, a wonderful adventure and at times, a real personal experience of life. In any sort of reading, there is always things to learn and implement.

Reading can make you a better writer
If you wish to become a compelling writer, then you must have a desire to read words by other fascinating authors. The impressive writings have the potential to get absorbed in the reader’s brain. I think there is no bigger achievement than this for a writer as well as the reader.

Reading inspires to become a better writer, but how?
Stephen King writes in his famous book ‘On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft’,
“The real importance of reading is that it creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing… Constant reading will pull you into a place… where you can write eagerly and without self-consciousness.”
Enjoy the following perks of reading and become a better writer;
- You will only identify the wants of a reader if you read. It helps you to understand the requirements of a reader.
- Reading lets you gain strong command overuse of language and vocabulary. A writer only writes well if he has a knowledge of new words. He will run out of words if he is not being challenged through online articles, blogs and obviously, books.
- Reading is the best form of inspiration for writers. Nothing inspires a writer more than reading.
- Reading helps you generate good ideas and fresh content.
- Reading is a great way to take lessons from smart writers.
- Reading gives you an idea of how writing should be done. By going through words and stories of different writers, you’ll find how a writer pulls off a trick and draft a story.
- By reading, you’ll also boost creativity and concentration. It opens up your skills and discovers a world of fascinating ideas and experiences. By reading, you delve into a world of your own. You enjoy the benefit of less rigid thinking and write flawlessly. As an avid reader, you become more concentrated towards the flow of words, grammar, and vocabulary.
- Reading encourages writers to write differently. Easy learners have the ability to follow the conversational styles, techniques, and art of writing.

This is a great post, I’m pinning! I totally agree that the primary way of getting good at writing is to read a lot of good writing. I’ve been practicing that lately. Although my blog is about Photoshop and Photo Editing, I see that good writing is still essential for my niche. I’ve taken a new fascination to Quora actually. A lot of great material there for inspiration and answers.

Whenever I struggle to remember why I write, I turn to a good book. Books have always been my happy place – I can get through anything if I can curl up with a good book for a while. I write because I want to give someone else that same gift, so returning my original love for words sustains me when writing is hard.
Just another perk to reading!
I admire your thought on this. It’s true, reading has become essential for every blogger belonging to any of the niche. Undoubtedly, Quora is a good platform to seek inspiration and variety of answers. It actually helps.
Thanks Tia for coming to Epife.
I’m glad that you shared your original love for words and I loved it. Books are a happy escape too. It allows us to enter in a different world where we can imagine and practice things with endless possibilities. Your idea of giving someone else a gift that you’ve learnt is tremendous.
Keep coming to Epife.
What a great post! I totally agree. Fiction, non-fiction, writing guides, it all helps get those creative juices flowing. I find myself constantly looking online for writing advice as well as book recommendations too. I feel that this a craft that needs to be constantly worked on and I can never learn too much about it. I recently read a book that has literally changed me as a writer. You and your readers must read “Creative Visualization for Writers” by Nina Amir (http://ninaamir.com/). It answers the questions about one’s own writing that you may never even think to, or moreover, know how to ask. Nina Amir must have taken a hard look at her own writing to come up with something so outwardly helpful for the writing community as a whole. The interesting dynamic within this book is that while it teaches a system of finding your creative voice, it also in turn teaches each and every writer to write as an individual. I see this as a double-edged sword and would strongly suggest any writer, rookie or veteran, to give this a thorough read-through. I really hope you will give it a read! I would love to hear what you think
Hey Arfa,
Totally agree that reading improves the writing. I even wrote a blog post on ways to improve at writing and listed reading as one of the main points. Other than last month, I haven’t been reading enough lately though.
I picked up Stephen Kings book ‘On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft’ from the library but never finished reading it. Other than that, I read everything from self-help books, to books about stocks & investing, and anything Charles Bukowski for fiction.
I pinned and have got your post scheduled to be shared on Twitter and Facebook tomorrow. Thanks for the read 🙂
Hi Garham,
Reading is a definite source to drive ideas for a better writing. That’s great to know that you follow a number of books. Though, I always try to continue my habit of reading. These days, I take the advantage of free ebooks and download them right away. Then, I take out time to give those books and blog posts a read.
You are lucky if you found Stephen Kings book! Maybe I’ll order it.
I’d definitely check out your blogpost for other informative posts.
Thankyou so much for your share garham.
I always have a couple books going. I just finished She Means Business by Carrie Green (highly recommend), Currently listening to The Power of Broke another great read. I’m kinda obsessed with business books right now.
Undoubtedly, books have their own value. Sarah, thanks for the recommendations. I need to check them out. I’m reading ‘HUSTLE’ and finding it really great to encouraged and feel motivated. Business books give so value and some amazing life stories too.
Wonderful tips. I also love my books, love to write and love my coffee. My writing begins with reading books for research, books for creativity, books on how to improve my writing. Reading more most certainly does make us a better writer.
